What are synthetic fragrances?

Synthetic fragrances are mixtures of various chemicals that produce a desired scent. Often it will take 200 chemicals, in a lab, to create a single scent. According to a 1986 report by the National Academy of Sciences, they found that up to 95% of the chemicals used in synthetic fragrances are derived from petroleum and include carcinogenic toxic chemicals, linked to cancer, birth defects and allergic reactions. A similar study in 2001, by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found that synthetic fragrances were often shown to contain hormone disruptors linked to abnormal cell reproduction. 

How do I know if a product contains synthetic fragrance?

In New Zealand, because it is not compulsory for brands to disclose their full list of ingredients, companies can legally hide hundreds of synthetic chemicals in one word—“fragrance”or “parfum” on their ingredient list—without revealing what those ingredients are. It’s referred to as a “trade secret” in the industry. These synthetic fragrances are much cheaper and more readily available, than those produced naturally, so are becoming even more popular and ever-present in our lives.

How can I avoid synthetic fragrances?

Luckily, you can easily avoid synthetic fragrances by reading product labels. Avoid products with "fragrance" or "parfum" on their ingredient list, and if there is no ingredient list at all - ditch the product.
