Funny sounding ingredients... what are they?!

There are some ingredients you might read in our ingredients and wonder what they are or what their purpose is. We use all naturally derived ingredients- sometimes these have very scientific sounding names so I have broken down what they are. 

What is… 

Sorbitan olivate is a mixture of the fatty acids from olive oil plus a dehydrated sugar known as sorbitol. Plant dervied, and natural. 

Cetearyl Olivate - fatty acids from olive oil. - functions as an emulsifier and slip agent or texture enhancer.

Caesalpinia spinosa gum is also categorised as a complex sugar that is hydrating for skin

Gluconolactone is a naturally-occurring food additive used as a sequestrant, an acidifier, or a curing, pickling, or leavening agent. 

Sodium benzonate is an organic sodium salt that results from the replacement of a proton from the carboxyl group of benzoic acid by a sodium ion. Basically, it’s the salt byproduct of benzoic acid. It’s an odorless, crystalline powder that works well as a preservative benzoic acid can be found in a number of plants, berries, and fruits.

Sorbic Acid and Potassium Sorbate are naturally derived and function as preservatives and antimicrobial agents.

Calcium gluconate -organic calcium salt - and is known for its skin soothing properties, resorting and smoothing skin

Dehydroacetic acid is an organic compound. It has potent antifungal and antibacterial properties, and is used in many personal and skin care products as a preservative. Non-pareben. Safe for skin. 

Benzyl alcohol is an organic alcohol that occurs naturally in some fruits (such as peaches, apricots, and cranberries) as well as teas. Recent studies have found topically applied benzyl alcohol might help wound healing by promoting collagen production. 

benzoic acid is found in many plants, including cinnamon, cloves, tomatoes, berries, plums, apples, and cranberries - used as a preservative. 

Potassium sorbate is the potassium salt of sorbic acid that is used as a preservative in cosmetics. Naturally derived. 

Glycerin is a naturally occurring molecule which increases water retention within the skin, keeping it moist and supple. This effective skincare ingredient is a powerful humectant that is derived from vegetables. 

Geoguard 221 - a natural broad-spectrum preservative - ( Dehydroacetic Acid (DHA) and Benzyl Alcohol.) Geogard 221  is designed to replace parabens and paraben-containing blends in personal care and cosmetic formulations. Offers higher efficacy across the board and substantially better performance in formulations with a lower pH.

What is Pantothenic acid (also known as vitamin B5) is an essential nutrient that is naturally present in some foods.  It’s a moisturising powerhouse that promotes soft, supple, comfortable skin.
